An expensive but healthy food

These berries are thought to be one of the one of the healthiest natural foods. There are many “stories” about the amazing benefits of these berries, many of which may be true, but a few verifiable facts about them (in dried form) follow:

1) High protein (about 12%), and are a complete protein. This is good for anybody, but particularly noteworthy to vegans, who choose not to get their protein from meats.

2) Decent fiber content (about 10%)

3) 18 (!!) amino acids

4) Like most sweet fruits, high in carbs and calories. 100 grams give you about 350-380 calories; roughly 3/4 from carbs and 1/4 from fat.

5) 6 vitamins, 8 amino acids, 11+ minerals (more in trace amounts)

6) Carotenoids, unsaturated fatty acids (this is a good thing), phytosterols (help lower cholesterol), and other healthy (or theoretically healthy but not particularly well researched) phytochemicals.

Enough with the technical jargon. These berries are great in cereal, smoothies (once hydrated), and tea. For tea, try this:

Put water, a small number of berries (6-15ish) and a teabag in your cup, microwave for about a minute per teacup (time varies), drop a small amount in your favorite tea along with the teabag and let the berries and tea steep for about 3 minutes.

This adds a subtle character to green tea (plus an unusual, tasty snack to do with a few of the sips). The flavor seems to blend well with chai and jasmine too. This may work differently for those who use creamer.

I recommend that you try a bag, keeping in mind that you may need to soak the berries in water/tea/whatever in order to make them soft, and see what you think. I have found they make a great addition to my usual cereal-only breakfast because they give me a much-needed protein boost.

If you like them quite a lot, you may want to take the time to look for a supply in a nearby Asian foods store. I have heard they can be purchased at a lower cost in bulk.

The Ultimate Berry

Having consumed Himalania Goji Berries for over one year, the Navitas Naturals Goji Berry is a great addition to the exotic food market. The Navitas Goji is harder and drier than the Himalania Goji, but the flavor is much sweeter and better tasting.

I love the fact that they’re raw, vegan, sun-dried, and free of chemicals and pesticides! Goji berries are believed to strengthen the immune system, increase energy and reduce fatigue, and reduce the threat of free radicals (due to HIGH levels of antioxidants). Gojis have highest ORAC score to date! The ORAC scale is a standardized test used to measure the total antioxidant potency of foods and nutritional supplements.

Definitely, one of my favorite foods!

Tasty berries!

These supposedly have some of the highest levels of antioxidants of any food, which is why I bought them. But I really like the taste too. It’s not too far off from a cross between a tomato and a strawberry, but a very little bit bitter at times.

Overall they taste great, though some kids might not like them due to the slight bitterness.

Edit: A few of these berries have a bit of mold on them. I would reduce my ranking by 1 star if I could.

Candy Bars in Granola Bar packaging.

I really enjoy the flavor and texture of these candybars, but don’t be fooled by the natural look of the product and packaging. These are all “treat” and no “snack”. Nature Valley is blurring the lines between the once distinct categories of granola bars and candy bars. This product certainly falls into the latter category, but appears to be marketing itself into the first.

Ingredients include a host of flavor enhancers and sweeteners that “healthy snack bar” types might be trying to avoid.

We have 22g Carbs, 7g Fat, 3g Protien and 170mg of Sodium
“Glycemic Spike” and “Water Retention” come to mind…

Check out these ingredients:

High Maltose Corn Syrup is the second ingredient, sugar is the 4th, High fructose corn syrup is the 5th. Also in there is wheat flakes, fructose, honey, milk products and soy lecithin. As for the good stuff, we have almonds as the first ingredient, rolled oats as the third, crisp rice as the 6th. There are other ingredients as well, surely listed in the product description here on Amazon.

One peave regarding the product packaging which states that the bar is “dipped in almond butter coating”. Well, I eat almond butter (instead of peanut butter). The “coating” they refer to is more of a white “sugary milk product coating” with a little almond mixed in. It is nothing like “almond butter”.

Overall, this bar packs the salty sweet flavor punch it boasts and the texture is fun. Just beware (or be aware) of all those “other” ingredients when you buy.

Way over priced – check your grocery store first.

This is a good product, my athlete kids eat them, carry them with them to events. But at 3.25 per box, buying them 12 at a time, you would think you would get a break. At our local grocery store, they are 2.44 per box. I price check most of the things I buy on-line and Amazon has always been competitive – certainly not here though. Amazon, I am disappointed. I bought them for the last time here – unless I can get them no where else.

Love these granola bars. However, amazon’s pricing has increased significantly in the past 2 months. I purchased this item through the subscribe and save program in October 2011 for $20.40. As of November 20, 2011, the price is $28.28. That’s a 38% increase in 1 month! What happened Amazon?

About the Brand
Planters started out as a imagination in the mind of a young Italian immigrant named Amedeo Obici. Little did he know that the little business he begun in 1906 would grow into the world’s grandest nut company.

Planters ad, 1949Obici, along with his friend and business collaborator Mario Peruzzi, founded Planters Peanut Company in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., in 1906. Seven years later, Obici built his firstborn processing plant in Suffolk, Virginia. Kraft has come a long way since 29-year-old James L. Kraft moved from Ontario, canada, to Chicago and started selling cheese to grocers from a horse-drawn wagon. In fact, the story dates back further, since for more than 200 years, a great deal of companies have unified to make Kraft Foods what it is today. Planter’s Trail Mix

Do you like peanuts in your trail mix? If so this is for you.
I personally don’t like a lot of peanuts, but the chocolate pieces, cashews, and raisins make up for the large amount of peanuts. Also, if you have a person who loves peanuts in your household, it works out well!

Love these creackers!!

This is my fourth time reordering this cracker. Can’t beat the price and the free shipping. We try to avoid flour and corn products and it’s very difficult to find a cracker that has neither of these ingredients. This cracker fits the bill and is so tasty. Highly recommended.

The yummiest crackers EVER

I bought these crackers from Whole Foods because I was doing a wheat-free cleanse. I thought they were going to be boring and cardboardish compared to some other crackers that I knew and loved. Much to my surprise they turned out to be absolutely yummy. They’re super crunchy and have loads of sesame seeds and other flavors. I only had the original but I can’t wait to try the rest of them.

The Kettle Corn for people on Weight Watchers

This Kettle Corn is only 1 point per serving. All the other “low fat” kettle corn I have found is 2 or even 3 points per serving. It is salty-sweet, flavorful, and I can munch to my heart’s content, knowing I’m still “on program”. A great evening snack!

I never knew there was a third type of chowder

This “chowder” claims to be neither New England nor Manhattan — i.e., no milk/cream and no tomatoes. As an old clam chowder fan, I’m willing to try something new, but this was not a success. Most disastrously, they brag about using sea salt but they use too darned much of it. The salty taste lingered throughout dinner. We still have five cans of this, so next time will make it with milk or half-and-half and see whether it converts into a decent New England chowder. The clams and vegetables seem okay, if only one could taste them better.

The worst one!

I bought this soup in Bar Harbor after having a wonderful lobster dinner. Expecting it to be a least a little better then from a supermarket. What a waste of money and effort. Smells and tastes terrible. I threw the rest of the cans into the garbage.

GOOD PRODUCT, TERRIBLE SHIPPING

Blue Crab soups are an excellent product. Unfortunately, the cans were in clear plastic, with no packing in the box. When they arrived, it looked like someone had used a hammer on many of the cans. We had planned to use them for Christmas, but they were so damaged we had to use them ourselves.

So Good!

I shipped this bread overseas to my office. It was well packed and came fresh! It was so good! My office went crazy over it. You can eat it just like it is, or toast it with Apple Butter. I am ordering four more packs now!

Tasty

This was the first product from Amy’s that I tried, and I like it. It doesn’t taste like regular chili, but I think that it has a good taste to it. The sodium content is quite high, though, so check that out if your watching your sodium intake. I think that it’s a little too expensive, but I’ll probably buy it again if it goes on sale.

If you’re not going to make it from scratch…

Buy this chili. Really, I love to make chili, but it tends to be an all day (and somewhat expensive) proposition. This chili has a subtle and balanced flavor that one wouldn’t expect from a can. As other reviewers have commented, it’s not too hot nor too mild, but with this being such a subjective sort of thing, I’m not sure how helpful this type of information is. If it’s too bland for your taste (I have a hard time imagining it would be too spicy, but it probably would be for my mom) you could kick it up with some hot sauce. What really impressed me then was not this “just right in the middle” characteristic, but the overall flavor and complexity of taste. Relatively good for you I suppose as well.
