When you are planning the menu for your child’s party, it is important to do not forget that the drinks are just as essential as the food. If the party is kept on a hot summer day you want a cooling beverage and if it’s for the duration of the winter something warming is called for.

The selections you make will have to be affiliated to the age of the children who will be attending the event. Although, you will find that a good deal of beverages are suitable for any age group.

If you will be serving an older crowd, consider non-alcoholic versions of drinks such as piña colada’s and flavored daiquiris, such as strawberry. These may without apparent effort be made without the addition of alcohol. You have the option of buying the ‘pre-mixed’ drink mix or making them from scratch. Give them dissimilar names than the alcoholic version so when they tell their parents with regards to the party they won’t mention they had marguerites but lime slushies.

Fruit smoothies are a good option and may be made ahead. An easy to do not forget recipe is a half gallon of juice to one huge container of yogurt and ½ pound of fruit. Add ingredients in batches and blend well. Store refrigerated until party time, then shake well before serving. You could garnish each glass with a slice of the fruit you used in the smoothie.

If you have your heart set on serving punch, there are thousands of recipes to choose from. If you are expecting a crowd, serving punch is very economical. The following recipe for ‘Banana Party Punch’ is a freshening modify from conventional red fruit punch. (Makes approximately 30 servings.)

4 cups sugar

6 cups water

5 mashed bananas

1 may frozen orange juice

1 may frozen lemonade

1 may pineapple juice

2 quarts 7-Up soda (should be room temperature)

Boil water and sugar for three minutes. Let cool.

Mix juices, following the instructions on each can.

Mix together the bananas and all of the prepared juices. Add sugar and water mixture. Freeze.

To serve: thaw punch for two to three hours. Slowly add 7-UP. This punch is best served when it is still slushy.

Any punch may be kept cold with a ornamental ice mold. Fill a little bowl with regarding an inch of water then freeze. Place a few lemon or lime slices on the frozen layer and cover with another inch of water. Repeat until the bowl is full. Add to the punch when serving as the ice bowl melts it releases the lemon and lime slices into the punch.

For a cold day serve a warm punch. Use apple juice as the base or green tea. Heat to closely boiling. Add sliced lemons, oranges, cloves and cinnamon sticks. Strain before serving.

And of course there is the old standby of hot chocolate. If your party guests are at least grade school age consider a hot chocolate beverage bar. Fill a Styrofoam cup with regards to two thirds full of your bestloved hot chocolate. Offer an array of condiments for the guests to add themselves such as mini marshmallows, little peppermint candy canes, chocolate chips, fresh raspberries, orange slices, caramel ice cream topping and of course whipped topping.

Fig and Honey Smoothie

Makes 1 Drink

If you can’t find fresh figs in your market, you may always order them through the mail from Harry & David (800-547-3033). Ask for Black Mission figs. They’re dark purple and blend up into a gorgeous lavender-colored drink.

4 big fresh figs (preferably Black Mission)
1/2 cup ice
3/4 cup vanilla yogurt (regular, low-fat, or non-fat)
2 tablespoons honey
Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 tablespoon)

Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Cover and pulse on and off until the mixture starts to swirl evenly. Blend on high for 20 seconds, or until the drink is completely smooth.

Variations

Desert Fig Smoothie Omit the honey. Add 2 tablespoons tamarind syrup and 2 fresh, pitted dates before blending.

Fig and Apricot Smoothie Omit the honey. Add 2 tablespoons apricot jam and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon before blending.

Ginger Fig Smoothie Squeeze a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger in a garlic press to extract the juice. If the ginger is too huge fit your garlic press, cut it into littler pieces and repeat the process. Add ginger juice before blending.

Lemon Fig Smoothie Use the juice of 1 whole lemon. Use lemon yogurt rather of vanilla yogurt.

5I couldn’t get bored

With over 750 drinks, running from malts to high balls, from nonalcoholic fruit punches to blitzed margaritas, this book will certainly get a work out on my patio this summer. Weinstein’s originality–on parade in his ice cream book–cranks into full gear with a torrent of refreshing, cool, light, spirited (and not) selections. Bananas Foster Smoothie! Bangkok Buzz! A Purple Mango Bongo! And each drink has several variations behind it–check out the list for Bloody Mary alone (eight alcoholic and four non-alcoholic versions). And then comes winter–with toddies and hot rums. He’s even got a Fig and Honey Smoothie for Hanukkah. OK, so I plan to make this a housewarming gift for every party I attend. But that way, I’ll be assured of great drinks wherever I go.

5What fun drinks!!!

Wow, these are great. I’ll never throw a boring party again. I’ve made the Pink Elephant Punch and the Dim Sum Sling 3 times and my friends love them. Some of my friends don’t “drink,” so I made them a few of the smoothies and ice cream drinks from this book and they had just as much fun as the rest of us. I’ve just ordered the other books in the series and can’t wait to get them.

The drinks come in a rainbow of colors, and if you don’t have a set of tiki glasses to serve them in, that’s okay – you can always get some on ebay!
